Hot Mackerel in Fort Desoto

The Spanish mackerel is a awesome game fish to catch. They put up a tremendous fight and often break off anglers who are unsuspecting of the fishes sharp teeth. Two summers ago i went to the Fort Desoto park in Pinellas county, Florida. I fished the pier at dog beach. During about noon a gigantic bait school of baby green backs surrounded the pier. Looking down in to the bait school i could see openings in the school where bigger fish were attacking. I simply took my 6 foot medium action spinning rod and reel and dropped the hook into the school. With a quick jerk of the hook i snagged a little greenback. Re hooking the bait i casted to the edge of the school. The injured bait swims irregularly, then a silver dart slams my bait. Waiting for a second i set my hook. The singing drag is like music to my ears. The fight last only for a few minutes then i real up a trophy Spanish Mackerel. That day i caught 18 Spanish mackerel. Scouts honor. Fishing is good when all you need is a fishing rod line and a hook.
